Radio Program - 3 Minutos con La Chureca

"3 Minutos with La Chureca" is program where children from La Chureca make 3 minute public service announcements for radio. Currently, there are about 14 children in the program. They have their own laptop computer for recording and editing the programs. They have made programs about AIDS, discrimination, the rights of the child and alternatives to drug use.

The program started in the fall of 2007, when 4 children from La Chureca came to Jalapa for a 3 day intensive training in producing public service announcements for radio. The initial group of children were Erica, Johnathan, Katie and David. They arrived in Jalapa with almost no experience with using a computer, more less producing a radio program. At the time, we were a little skeptical about the prospects of success. But after just 3 days they were writing scripts, recording stories and editing the raw recordings into programs. They were able to produce 3 programs at the end of 3 days of hard work, Discrimination, Rights of the Child and AIDS. Upon returning to Managua they took their shows to Radio Ya where they received overwhelming support. They were able to get their programs aired on one of the largest radio stations in Managua.
