Sister School Program
Thank you for your interest in the Sister School program. The Sister School program is an initiative for primary and secondary students in the United States and Nicaragua to link together in cross-cultural classroom learning partnerships. The program builds and connects communities of youth through cultural understanding, leadership training, and community service. Our mission is two-fold:
The Sister School program values community empowerment, so we want the schools of Nicaragua to form a partnership with new North American friends not a dependency. The first step is typically an exchange of letters, pictures, and drawings between the two schools.
In order to effect real change in both places, students then need to use their new friendships to take positive action. The students learn together about projects and initiatives such as the Millennium Development Goals or the United Nations Convention of the Rights of a Child. The students use the internet to access curriculum resources. The goal is to work together in collaboration to design and implement a service project that helps to meet one or more of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals or perhaps to help promote Children’s Rights.
Students develop leadership skills, creativity, and tools to take initiative to get informed and make a difference. This program aims to create strong youth leaders who can help create communities of youth to take action in their local region and build an active, international youth network.
We also encourage teacher exchanges and have rbought nine Nicaraguan teachers to the United States over the last four year and many more teachers from the United States to Nicaragua.
We hope to bring a small student delegation from Nicaragua to Colorado soon and you could help make this happen! To find out more informaiton, please contact us or you can donate now.
